Atlanta Gas Light Company Urges Gardeners to "Call Before You Dig" this Spring

With warm weather just around the corner, lawn and garden maintenance is a priority. However, it is also a time when gas lines and other utilities are cut while digging in the yard. Atlanta Gas Light Company advises anyone who will be planting trees or installing an underground sprinkler system on their property with mechanized equipment to first call the "Call Before You Dig" hotline, 1-800-282-7411 (in Atlanta 770-623-4344). The month of April is recognized as "Call Before You Dig" month.

The hotline is managed by the Utilities Protection Center of Georgia. Within 72 hours of receiving the call (excluding weekends) utility representative(s) will come to the property and locate the utility lines. There is no cost to consumers to use this service.

"The Utility Protection Center's 'Call Before You Dig' hotline provides a critical service to us," said Rick Lonn, director of engineering compliance, Atlanta Gas Light Company. "Safety is our number one priority and calling before you dig allows us to locate our gas lines, so that excavators and homeowners can work safely around them."

Customers who smell natural gas should immediately call Atlanta Gas Light Company's "Gas Leak Line," 770-907-4231. The line is open and staffed daily on a 24-hour basis.
