About Us
Our Role
For almost a century and a half -- ever since Atlanta Gas Light installed the city of Atlanta's first gas street lights in 1856 -- we've provided a constant energy source for Georgia. A lot has changed since then. But one constant has been our commitment to provide Georgians with a reliable, safe and clean source of energy to their homes and businesses.
Until 1998, with deregulation of the state's natural gas market, Atlanta Gas Light was the supplier and seller of natural gas to customers. Today we still operate and maintain the gas pipes and read meters, with certified marketers handling the billing functions.
Atlanta Gas Light's role in today's environment includes:
- Distributing natural gas for the marketers
- Maintaining the gas system infrastructure, including responding to gas leaks
- Performing meter reading for the marketers
Our History
Atlanta Gas Light is one of the nation's oldest utility companies, chartered February 16, 1856, to provide 50 gas lights for the streets of Atlanta. Today we serve nearly 1.5 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in 243 communities throughout Georgia. We are the eighth largest natural gas distribution utility in the United States, and the largest in the Southeast.
